About the Salowa Group of Companies

The Salowa Group of Companies is involved in agriculture and real estate and has recently diversified into the energy sector. In the agricultural area, Salowa Group through Kiawaroga Farm Limited, owns a tea estate - Kiawaroga Farm - in the Limuru area of Kiambu County in Kenya. The farm takes its name from the Kiawaroga River that fronts the southern border of the tea plantation.

Plans are underway to develop parcels of land that the Salowa Group owns, including one adjacent to Kiawaroga Farm. As more information about this becomes available, we will update our website to reflect the changes.

Our History

The Salowa  Group was created through the exploits of Samuel Njoroge Waruhiu, a prominent scholar, lawyer and businessman in Kenya. The word "Salowa" is derived from the combination of the name Sam, his wife's name, Lois, and their last name Waruhiu.. The unique character of the name has been retained as the family business has taken shape.

Sam Waruhiu

Sam Waruhiu SC, 1927 - 2011Samuel Njoroge Waruhiu (Sam) was born in Kiambu, Kenya, where he attended primary and high school. He thereafter attended Makerere College in Uganda (Diploma in Education) and the  University of Wales, Aberystwyth (BA and LLB - Hons), after which he was admitted to the Bar by the Middle Temple Inn of Court, London.

Almost immediately after being admitted to the Bar, Sam returned to Kenya and joined the Royal Technical College, Nairobi (which became the University College, Nairobi) where he taught law. He rose steadily through the ranks culminating in his being the Vice Principal of University College, Nairobi when he left the institution in 1969.

Sam started practising law in 1967 and did so until his demise. Between 1971 and 1972 he was president of the Law Society of Kenya, and in 2003 he was appointed a Senior Counsel.

In the business world, Sam was a Director of several companies in Kenya, through which he gained considerable commercial experience including in the areas of banking, transportation, and agriculture. Sam was a fellow of the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, and a fellow and member of the Board of Trustees of the Eisenhower Exchange Fellowship.

In 2011, Sam succumbed to illness after a brave battle he bore over several years. He is survived by Lois Muthoni, four grown children, and three granddaughters.

Lois Waruhiu

Los Waruhiu on 06 Oct 2013Lois Muthoni Waruhiu was also born in Kiambu, Kenya. After attending her primary school, she was amongst the first African girls to attend the prestigious Alliance Girls High School in Kikuyu in Kiambu, Kenya.

While at Alliance, Lois was taught geography by the dashing young Makerere College graduate, Sam Waruhiu. Having started her education later than he, the age gap was appropriate enough that a relationship blossomed - one that lasted almost 60 years!

Lois went on to study nursing and worked at King George VI Hospital (now Kenyatta National Hospital) and the European Hospital (now Nairobi Hospital), after which she and Sam's sister proceeded to the United Kingdom where they earned their Diploma in Nursing Care.

On her return to Kenya, Lois wed Sam and started a career in nursing at the Nairobi City Council. With an interest in child welfare, she became involved in the Council nursery school system, and was soon charged with running it for the city. Lois retired from service to the city as Chief Nursing Officer in charge of nursing staff in the City's hospitals and clinics, and the running of all the city's nursery schools.

Lois then started a pharmacy in the heart of Nairobi that she ran for 26-years. She has also been involved in small-scale farming and is a Director of the Salowa Group companies.

When she is not spending time with one of the many groups that assist the less fortunate in which she is involved, she can be found socializing with her children and (especially) her granddaughters.
The latest area into which the Salowa Group has diversified is the energy sector through Salowa Energy Limited. More about Salowa Energy Limited can be found here.
